이 논문은 경제적, 정치적, 인문학적 관점을 포함하여 사람들이 고등 교육을 추구하는 다양한 이유를 고찰한다. 전문가들 사이에는 대학 교육이 국가 경쟁력과 개인의 능력을 신장시키는 데에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳐 사회적, 물질적 번영으로 이어진다는 공감대가 있다. 또한, 토머스 제퍼슨의 역사적 통찰에 입각하여 민주주의의 번영을 위해서는 제대로 된 정보를 갖춘 시민을 육성하는 교육이 중요하다는 사실이 폭넓게 인정받고 있다. 이 논문은 고등 교육의 중심이 직업 훈련 쪽으로 기울어지는 현재의 경향을 비판적으로 평가하며, 고전 자유교양교육의 더 넓은 사회적, 지적 혜택을 간과하는 것에 대해 경계할 필요가 있다고 주장한다. 독특한 고전 커리큘럼과 세미나 방식으로 유명한 세인트 존스 대학의 모델을 그 대안으로 제안하며, 이를 한국의 자유 교양 교육을 활성화하기 위한 잠재적인 청사진으로 제시하고자 한다. 구체적으로는 기술 및 사회가 급변하는 가운데 학생들이 다양한 경력과 평생 학습을 위해 더 잘 준비될 수 있도록 전문 기술과 고전적 지혜를 균형 있게 조화시키는 포괄적인 교육 접근 방식을 채택할 것을 제안한다. 이러한 교육을 통해 다재다능하고 전인적인 개인을 양성하는 데 크게 기여할 수 있다는 것이다. 마지막으로, 이 논문은 2019년부터 세인트존스의 그레이트북스 프로그램을 수용하여 한국 교육현장에 적합하도록 발전시켜 온 I 대학교를 중심으로 대학의 전공 및 교양 교육 커리큘럼에 이러한 교육 방법과 내용을 통합하기 위해 어떤 노력이 이루어졌는지 살펴 본 후 인천 지역과 춘천 지역에서 지난 몇 년간 중고등학교 교육과 시민 교육에 접목하여 어떤 성과를 이루어 나가고 있는지 등에 대해서도 논의한다.

This paper examines the multifaceted reasons why people pursue higher education, encompassing economic, political, and humanistic perspectives. There is a consensus among experts regarding the positive impacts of university education on national competitiveness and individual empowerment, leading to societal and material prosperity. Additionally, the importance of education in nurturing informed citizens for a thriving democracy, drawing on historical insights from Thomas Jefferson, has been widely acknowledged. The paper critically assesses the current inclination towards vocational training in higher education, warning against the neglect of the broader societal and intellectual benefits of classical liberal arts education. It proposes the model of St. John's College, renowned for its unique classical curriculum and seminar method, as a potential blueprint for revitalizing liberal arts education in South Korea amidst rapid technological and societal changes. The study suggests that adopting a comprehensive approach to education, which balances professional skills with classical wisdom, could better prepare students for a future of diverse careers and lifelong learning, thereby contributing significantly to the cultivation of versatile, well-rounded individuals. Finally, this paper explains what efforts have been made to incorporate such educational methods and content into the major and general education curricula of South Korean universities and what more needs to be done henceforth.
